“Ugh, I hate this song,” Big Booty Judy said one day as we were driving somewhere.
“This is The Pretenders,” I replied. “I didn’t know people were allowed to hate anything by The Pretenders.”
I had never heard the track before — thanks to Sirius XM Radio’s “1st Wave” channel, every once in a while I’ll be introduced to a classic alternative song that previously had escaped me. In this case, it was “My City Was Gone” (YouTube video here) which Wikipedia says was the B-side to “Back on the Chain Gang.”
BBJ hates it because it reminds him of living and working in Ohio — although he was in Columbus, not Akron, it was still an era he’d rather forget because he was miserable personally and professionally. It was icing on the cake that after he moved back to Phoenix, one of the stores he worked at included the song on its playlist, so he was constantly hearing it.
I, meanwhile, had never heard it before that day. (Or, perhaps more likely, I had and just never took note.) But now it seems like I hear it fairly frequently — both on 1st Wave and on ’80s on 8. It’s by no means my favorite song by The Pretenders, even if I don’t have the same contentious history with the state that BBJ does.
