Music for the machines

I need this tattooed on the inside of my eyeballs.

5:30 freaking a.m.: I wake up most days now around then — partly because I leave my east-facing windows unshuttered* so the dawn blasts my bedroom with sunlight, and partly because this little ditty goes off shortly thereafter, in case I’m feeling lazy.

It started when Mr. Torres was bemoaning his weight, and I suggested that we head to Tangible in the a.m. so we could do cardio before work. I enjoy the postworkout routine of coming home and eating an actual breakfast (oatmeal, egg whites with salsa), deciding what I’m going to wear … maybe sneaking a 15-minute nap in before it’s time to get UP-up-up.

So now it’s a half-habit for me, although lately tedium has become my enemy. The television screens on the Precor elliptical machines don’t work and the view of Seventh Street traffic is nondescript, so I find myself visually eavesdropping on someone else’s screen — this one woman on the treadmill is prone to tune in to “I Love Lucy,” so I watch and try to figure out the plot without the benefit of dialogue — and listening to my iPod.

To break up the monotony, I started making themed playlists — “cardio playlist THE CARS,” “cardio playlist GIRLS ROK!” and perhaps my favorite for the title alone, “cardio playlist SLUTS.” Each tops out just over 30 minutes, and so now instead of trying to talk myself out of finishing the session (“20 minutes is almost as good as a half-hour”), I concentrate on the songs. Sometimes I catch myself singing along under my breath, which is a good sign.

Inspired by my co-worker Erica, I’m trying something new: sharing. Anytime over the next week, click this link to go to my public folder on Dropbox and download a .zip file with my New Wave playlist. Here’s the lineup:

  1. “Why Can’t I Be You?” by The Cure
  2.  “Coast to Coast” by Jesus and Mary Chain
  3. “Goody Two Shoes” by Adam Ant
  4. “Don’t Go” by Yaz
  5. “Can’t Stop the World” by The Go-Go’s
  6. “Dreaming” by Blondie
  7. “Way Behind Me” by The Primitives
  8. “Do You Want Crying” by Katrina & the Waves
  9. “Challenge of the Love Warriors” by Tom Tom Club†

(I know some of the bands don’t count as New Wave artists, but it’s my playlist and I can name it what I want.) I’ll keep the link active through Saturday, June 25. Enjoy! And look for a new one down the road, too.

* Voyeurs, please take note.
† You’ll know when you’re reaching the end of your session when this comes on.
