In the 1950s my mom served in the U.S. Air Force; she worked in Germany and even played on the women’s basketball team. I remember her talking about visiting friends who lived in citrus country and being overwhelmed by the scent of orange blossoms — something as exotic as tropical flowers to someone born and raised in frigid Montana.
This morning I got up a little earlier than usual, picked a zip-lock bag’s worth of blossoms off our 110 orange trees, and overnighted them to my mom so she can enjoy an olfactory blast from the past.
