Make This Cocktail: Truth Serum

Certainly strong enough to loosen tongues

Truth Serum

There is a unique shade of blue-green that renders Instagram ineffectual: When I imported the original version of this photo, I watched it load, then immediately and automatically concert to something yellower and more unattractive that all its filters cannot undo. I’ve had the same thing happen with photos of the vivid pink of bougainvillea blooms — it’s like digital images can’t capture the full intensity.

For this drink, imagine the perfect child of green Midori melon liqueur and blue curaçao, and that gives you an idea of the true color — and the first two ingredients. My friend Mark, whom I’ve known since elementary school, had this cocktail at a Prohibition-style bar in San Francisco and suggested I try my hand at it.

While I was assembling everything, I kept thinking, “There is no way this is going to turn out right,” but it’s actually quite good!

It’s also quite potent: After one, Mr. Brooks had to go lie down for awhile, and I certainly had that pleasantly warm/buzzed/relaxed feeling.

(Fun vision check: If you look closely enough, you can make out the W and the E of the word “sweet” etched into the glass.)

Ingredients:
  • 1 shot blue curaçao
  • 1 shot Midori melon liqueur
  • 1 shot vodka
  • 1 shot triple sec
  • 1 drop absinthe
Instructions:
  1. Combine all ingredients in a highball glass over ice and top with lemonade.
